Self Determination Program

California's Self-Determination Program (SDP) empowers you to take direct control of your benefits and gives you the freedom to decide how you can best utilize the resources available

The California Self-Determination Program (SDP) is a statewide initiative that gives people with developmental disabilities and their families more choice and control over the services and supports they receive. Unlike traditional regional center services, where options are limited to pre-approved vendors and programs, SDP allows participants to design a personalized plan that reflects their unique goals, preferences, and needs. Participants are given an individual budget based on what the regional center would spend for their services, but they gain the freedom to use those funds creatively.

With this flexibility, people can hire support staff directly, purchase community-based services, or develop customized programs that foster independence, employment, or inclusion. A financial management service helps handle payroll and accountability, while an independent facilitator can assist with planning and connecting to resources.

Choosing SDP can be especially beneficial for those who feel traditional regional center options are too restrictive or do not fully support their lifestyle. It empowers participants to build services around their strengths, cultural values, and aspirations, whether that means pursuing meaningful work, living more independently, or joining new community activities. By placing the person at the center of decision-making, the Self-Determination Program creates a pathway to greater dignity, autonomy, and opportunity.
