Spending time in the community to focus on the development and practice of independent living skills is an essential element in helping people with disabilities live fulfilled, autonomous lives. To support our participants’ confidence to do the things in a public setting that most people take for granted, our community integration team takes some individuals on outings of their choice where they work on their chosen community goals for independent living skills. Each participant at Ability Now Bay Area is scheduled for this community integration time on a rotating basis, having their choice of outings when it’s their turn. These daily outings are objective and learning-oriented, and individualized for each person with an emphasis on practical lessons such as money management, accessing community resources, transportation and communication.
Additionally, our clients participate in field trips to museums, parks, and sports events such as Oakland A’s games and Warriors basketball games. If you would like to invite Ability Now participants to visit your cultural or educational space, or to attend an event, please reach out to us! We’re always excited to build new relationships in our community.
